13 Spartans Honored By Phil Steele Magazines

Cleveland, Ohio----- Phil Steele Publications, providing thorough national coverage of college football year-round, named 13 San Jose State University football players to its All-America and All-Mountain West post-season honors team.

Defensive lineman Cade Hall, the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and the Mountain West Football Championship Most Valuable Player, was named a third-team All-American and to Phil Steele's first-team All-Mountain West squad.

Like the vote of the Mountain West coaches, wide receiver Bailey Gaither, offensive lineman Jack Snyder, Hall, defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko, and linebacker Kyle Harmon were first-team all-conference picks on the Phil Steele team.

Quarterback Nick Starkel, wide receiver Tre Walker, tight end Derrick Deese, Jr., and safety Tre Jenkins, were named to Phil Steele's second-team all-conference squad.

Safety Tre Webb and kicker Matt Mercurio, the Spartans' top scorer in 2020 with 53 points in eight games, were third-team picks.

Running back Tyler Nevens, the Spartans' leading rusher with 515 yards and five touchdowns, and offensive lineman Tyler Stevens were honored as fourth-team players.

Comparing the publication's preseason predictions, only seven Spartans were named to one of Phil Steele's four preseason all-conference teams.

San José State finished the season as the Mountain West football champion, played in the Offpad Arizona Bowl and had a 7-1 win-loss record. The Spartans' .875 winning percentage was the school's best since 1940.
