Volleyball Falls 3-1 At Air Force

USAFA, Colo.—Haylee Nelson recorded her second double-double of the season, but the San José State volleyball team hit .131 in a 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20) loss at Air Force Friday evening.
 
Nelson led the team with 12 kills and 16 digs and added a block and service ace. Latahevai Lousi added 11 kills and seven digs. Makayla Lewis led the Spartans with four blocks, while Ryann Thomison and Allyson Alden each recorded three blocks.
 
Mamie Keith Garard recorded her first double-double of the season and 10th of her career with 19 assists and 10 digs. Mia Schafer had 18 assists and six digs, while Sara Smevog had 10 digs and two service aces.
 
The Spartan hit .131 for the match with 45 kills on 137 attempts and 27 errors. The team was outblocked 11-6, but recorded four service aces.


 
Sets 1 & 2
Air Force controlled the first two sets, winning 25-19, 25-21. In the first set, the teams battled back and forth, with five tied scores and only two lead changes. The Spartans led by three points at 9-6 and 13-10, before the Falcons tied the set at 14-14 and took the lead for good at 15-14.
 
The second set saw the lead change nine times and the score tied 12 times. The Spartans led 20-18 before Air Force tied the set with a Spartan service error and Falcon ace. Air Force then took the lead at 21-20, forcing a San José State timeout, and extended the lead to 23-20. The Spartans final point came on a Falcon service error (one of 14 for Air Force on the night), and Air Force got back-to-back kills to win 25-21.
 
Set 3
The Spartans won the set 25-22 and led the set by as many as nine points at 11-2. Air Force slowly chipped away at the Spartan lead and tied the set at 20-20 and 21-21. SJSU then took the lead on a Whitney Barnes-Thomison block and led by two on a Thomison block. Air Force got no closer than one at 23-22, and Nelson put the set away for the Spartans with a kill.
 

 
Set 4
Air Force jumped out to an early lead as the Spartans rallied to tie the set at 7-7. That was the last tie between the two teams as the Falcons led by as many as seven points (20-13) and won the set 25-20.
 
The two teams play again Saturday night at 6 p.m. MT/5 p.m. PT.
