Scoring Streaks Don't All Go For The Spartans

tiFresno, Calif.—For the third time this season Haylee Nelson recorded a double-double in a match, but the San José State volleyball team dropped a matinee match at Fresno State 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) Thursday.

Nelson led all hitters with 11 kills and had 14 digs, her fourth consecutive match with double-digit digs. Three other Spartans had five or more kills – Latahevai Lousi and Whitney Barnes with sixth and Allyson Alden with five. Letizia Cammillucci made her Spartan debut in the third set and had a kill and a dig.

Mamie Keith Garard and Mia Schafer led the Spartan ace attack with two each and Sarah Smevog and Yazmin Pitpit each recorded one.

Set 1 – Fresno State took the early lead in the set at 9-7 before the Spartans scored seven consecutive points, six with Mia Schafer serving, to take a 14-9 lead. SJSU got kills from Barnes, Nelson and Alden and a Schafer service ace during that stretch. San Jose State held the team at 20-15 on a Fresno State service error before Fresno State scored 10 of the next 13 points to win the set 25-23.

The Spartans started the set with a 9-5 lead before Fresno State used a 7-2 run to take a 12-11 lead.  Trailing 15-14 and with Garard serving, San José State ripped off five consecutive points including two Garard aces to take the lead back at 19-15. The Bulldogs then tied the set at 20-20 and won 25-22.

Set 3 – This set had both teams battling for much of the set, with neither team taking more than a two-point lead. The set was tied at 13-13 before Fresno State used a four-point run to take a 17-13 lead and won the set 25-21.
