January Student Athletes of the Month Announced

San José State University women's swimmer Rebecca Petoe and men's basketball player Richard Washington are the Student-Athletes of the Month for January, presented by Pacific Office Automation.

Petoe won three races in a meet at Fresno State. She won the 100 breaststroke at 1:06.76, helping the Spartan sweep the breaststroke titles at the meet. Petoe also won the 100 butterfly at 59.25 and the 200 individual medley at 2:13.61, and swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay to start the meet.

Washington averaged 21.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in seven games played in January. He scored at least 15 points in every game before an injury sidelined him. He scored 30-plus points twice during the month – 30 points at Fresno State (1/8) and 35 points against Colorado State (1/14). Washington now has three games this season with 30 or more points scored, the most by a Spartans since 2011 (Adrian Oliver). He scored 26 points to start 2021 to lead the Spartans to a near upset over Boise State. Prior to his injury in the first game against New Mexico, he was in the top-10 nationally in points per game.
