Victory Was Team Effort In Spartans Home Debut

San Jose, Calif.—Playing at home in almost a year, the San José State women's tennis team made their home debut a memorable one. The Spartans won 4-3 over San Francisco Friday after at the Spartan Tennis Complete but needed effort from the entire team to earn the four points.

Lara Marco Mas and Alba Pedrero Galindo contributed a point in doubles and each had a singles point for the Spartans Friday. Playing at #2 doubles, they won 7-6 (3) to clinch the doubles point for SJSU.  In singles, Pedrero Galindo won at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Marco Mas played #6, needed three sets to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and was the deciding point in the match.

The Spartans won the doubles point by winning at #1 and #2. Rozalina Youseva and Savannah Sendar won 6-0, to give SJSU the advantage to start doubles play. Tamara Culibrk and Irena Muradyan fell 6-4 in the third doubles position, leaving the doubles point up to Pedrero Galindo and Marco Mas. They went to a tiebreaker to win 7-5.

Needing just three points for the win, Pedrero Galindo won at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, to put the Spartans up 2-0. Muradyan, playing at #3 singles, also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to give San José State a 3-0 lead. Youseva then fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 at #2 singles to give a point to the Dons.

The final three singles matches went three sets. Culibrk won her first set 7-5, but then fell 6-1, 6-2. Sendar lost 6-3 in the first set but came back to win the second set, 6-3, before falling 6-4, to tie the match at 3-3.

That set up the #6 singles match as the deciding point for the day. Marco Mas fell 6-2 in the first set but came back to win 6-3, 6-3, to secure the win for the Spartans.

"Today was a complete team effort and very gratifying to get a 4-3 win this early in the season," said Spartan head coach Chad Skorupka. "Lara and Alba winning the doubles point was huge for us as well as Lara winning at number six to clinch the match. I told the team that everyone has to be ready to be the person to step up in a match. We are looking forward to playing at Santa Clara Saturday morning."

San José State is back it tomorrow with a match at Santa Clara beginning at 11 a.m.
