#16-Spartans Lose Opener To #8-Cal, 19-8

Berkeley, Calif.----- In its 2021 season opener, #16-ranked San José State University lost to #8-California, 19-8, in a non-conference women's water polo match.
 
            San José State seniors Tyanna Supreme and Lili Urvari led the Spartans in goal scoring with two each.  Both of Supreme's scores came on power plays. Her first goal came at 6:48 in the first quarter giving the Spartans their only lead of the match.
 
            By the time Supreme found the cage again at the start of the second quarter, Cal (4-0) held a commanding 6-2 lead and was ahead, 11-4 at halftime. The Golden Bears had a team shooting percentage of 55.9 percent converting 19-of-34 shots. Cal also was effective on its power play converting 6-of-11 chances.
 
            San Jose State (0-1) also scored six times on 17 power play opportunities. Olga Descalzi Portell scored on a third-quarter penalty shot and Urvari notched the Spartans' first even-strength goal of the season in the fourth quarter to close out the team's scoring.
 
            Elli Protopapas, Georgia Gilmore and Reagan Whitney each scored three times for the Golden Bears.
 
            Goalkeeper Hannah Henry played the first three quarters of the match for the Spartans and was credited with six saves including stopping a 5-meter penalty shot. Elaina Davey made her San Jose State and major college debut playing the fourth quarter and had two saves.
 
            San José State returns to action, Friday, March 5, in a non-conference match at UC Davis. The first sprint is at 3:00 p.m.
