Chula Vista, Calif.----- Under windy conditions and cool temperatures, San Jose State University had one of the four best team scores in the second round of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic men's golf tournament.
The Spartans battled their way around the par 72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club course to post a 297 team score for a 36 total of 609. San Jose State was 15 strokes than its first round and is in 16th place heading into the final round of the 20-team, 54-hole tournament on March 10. The Spartans scored very well on the four par-5 holes going nine-under among their four counting individual scores.
UCLA moved into first place in the team standings posting a second-round team score of even par 288 for a 575 total. Nevada is second at 584. New Mexico's 296 team score boosted the Lobos into a third-place tie overall with Colorado at 585.
Washington joined UCLA, New Mexico and San José State as the teams in the field with a second-round team score of 297 or lower. The average second round individual score was 77.10, more than two strokes higher than the first round, which translates to a 308 team score when counting the best four scores from among five players.
Senior Sean Yu led the way for the Spartans again with an even par 72. Yu was three-under on the par 5's notching three of his four birdies in the round to offset his four bogeys. Yu moved up 30 spots in the race for medalist honors and is tied for 19th place at 146.
Every San Jose State golfer in the lineup followed Yu's lead improving in round two compared to the opening 18 holes. Nate Jetter followed his first round 80 with a 74. Kristopher Stiles was a stroke better at 75 compared to his opening round 76. Vijay Srinivasan was six shots better at 76. San Jose State did not count Caleb Shetler's 79 in the team scoring.
Only nine players in the 112-player field matched or bettered par in the second round. UCLA's Devon Biing is the only golfer to break 70 each day and is the tournament individual leader at 137 after scores of 68 and 69. Jackson Solem of Denver and Ryan Bisharat of San Diego State playing as an individual entry are tied for second at 140. Like UCLA's Biing, Solem and Bisharat have matched or been under par for each of the first two rounds.
The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on March 10.
