San Jose, Calif.—The San José State women's tennis team posted its sixth-consecutive "W" on Friday as the team defeated visiting Pacific, 5-2, at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The team continued the best start in recent history with a 6-0 record. The Spartans started the day by winning the doubles point, but it took a team effort to win the point. Rozalina Youseva and Irena Muradyan won the first doubles match 6-1 in the third position. Alba Pedrero Galindo and Lara Marco Mas fell 6-3 in the top spot to tie doubles at 1-1.
The doubles point then came down to the veteran play of Savannah Sendar and Tamara Culibrk. The two battled to tie the set at 6-6 and won the tiebreaker 7-3 to win 7-6 (3) and give SJSU the first point of the match.
In singles play, Muradyan won the first point after winning 6-3, 6-3 at #3. Youseva then won her singles match 6-4, 6-1, to give San José State a 3-0 lead. Raquel Villan Pereira then won at #5 singles 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) to clinch the team win for the Spartans.
In other singles action, Pedrero Galindo fell in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Marco Mas won at #4 singles 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-3. Sendar closed out the action for SJSU as she fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"I am happy for our two seniors who played doubles together and won the tiebreak to win at #2 doubles," said Spartan head coach Chad Skorupka. "Raquel Villan Pereira played two very smart tiebreak sets to clinch the match for the team. Irena Muradyan and Rozalina Youseva recorded some very solid singles wins as well. They were very focused as both won in straight sets."
The Spartans play next against Saint Mary's on Saturday, March 20, beginning at noon at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
