RENO, Nev. - San Jose State women's soccer picked up a well-earned point on Friday evening as they played Nevada to a 1-1 draw at MacKay Stadium. Both teams improve to 0-3-1 on the season.
The Spartans played one of their best overall matches of the season with a good offensive attack paired with a good showing by the defensive back line. SJSU put up a season-high 10 shots with five on target while holding the Wolf Pack to eight shot attempts, four on-goal. Spartan keeper Zoe Aguirre had a nice outing to make three saves in 110 minutes in the net.
After a scoreless first half, San Jose State found the scoreboard first in the 72nd minute. A great cross attempt baited Nevada's goalkeeper to leave her post as she rushed out to knock the ball away. A pair of Spartans quickly rushed to the loose ball and freshman Jaiden McClellan fired off a rocket that easily cleared everyone's heads and found its way to the back of the net to give SJSU a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the first of McClellan's collegiate career.
Unfortunately just three minutes later the Spartans found the game tied once again as Nevada was able to capitalize on a corner kick inside the 75th minute. San Jose State was able to fire off two more shots in the final minutes of regulation with Sabrina Weinman having the best chance inside the 89th minute, but her shot was hauled in by the Wolf Pack Keeper.
A defensive battle ensued in overtime with neither team able to find a shot opportunity in the first period. In the second overtime, a well-placed cross off a free kick was nearly knocked home for the Spartan game-winner, but the shot was pulled down before reaching its mark to end the threat. Nevada attempted just one shot of their own with just over a minute and a half to play, but it sailed wide as the Spartans held on to the tie.
San Jose State has a quick turnaround as they get set to head to Boise State (2-1-1) for a 12:00 p.m. kick on Sunday.
