Las Vegas, Nev.—Haylee Nelson led the San José State volleyball team in kills Friday night, but Mountain West leader UNLV hit .321 for the match as the Rebels won 3-1 at Cox Pavilion.
Nelson had a team-high 13 kills in the match and added eight digs and an ace. Sarah Smevog led the Spartans with 13 digs, while Latahevai Lousi added nine kills and 10 digs.
Ryann Thomison hit a team-best .500 in the match (9-1-16) while Allyson Alden hit .312 (7-2-16).
Set 1 – The two teams battled to start the match with five lead changes and nine tied scores in the set. Down 14-11, the Spartans came back to tied the set at 14-14 and had a 17-16 lead. UNLV scored nine of the next 11 points to win the set 25-19.
Set 2 – UNLV led from start to finish, winning the set 25-14. The Spartans had gotten within two points at 13-11 before the Rebels scored 10 straight to lead 23-11.
Set 3 – The Spartans held the lead for much of the set, leading by as many as six including 20-14. UNLV rallied to tie the set at 22-22 and had a brief lead at 23-22, before SJSU scored the next three points to win 25-23.
Set 4 – UNLV controlled the set from first serve and used three service aces by Mariena Hayden to break the set open and eventually win 25-17.
The two teams play again Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch on the Mountain West Network.
