Tempe, Ariz.----- Riley Agerbeek scored a personal single-match best four goals, but it was Arizona State's balanced offensive attack in the Sun Devils' 12-8 win over San José State University in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo match.
Agerbeek's second goal of the first quarter pulled the Spartans (1-5, 0-2 MPSF) to within 3-2, before #4-Arizona State (9-4, 3-1 MPSF) scored three unanswered goals for a 6-2 advantage with 2:49 to go before halftime. San Jose State closed its deficit to two goals twice in the third quarter, but got no closer the rest of the way.
Olga Descalzi Portell, who scored her 100th Spartan career goal a day earlier against the Sun Devils, scored twice on her three shots in the match. Sierra Painter and Lili Urvari accounted for the other two San José State goals.
Eight Arizona State players scored in the match. Amira Van Buren, Bente Rogge, Alba Olive Marti and Ali Cameron scored twice for the Sun Devils.
San Jose State goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with seven saves. Arizona State goalkeeper Itzahiana Baca stopped four shots. The Spartans' shooting percentage of 29.6 percent was much better than in its 11-4 loss to the Sun Devils on March 20, but still not enough to pull out a victory.
#17-San Jose State continues MPSF action next weekend at #1-USC on March 27 and 28.
