Las Vegas, Nev.—Latahevai Lousi and Haylee Nelson led the Spartans in kills Saturday night, but the San José State volleyball team was outhit by Mountain West leader UNLV in a 3-0 loss in Las Vegas.
Lousi and Nelson each recorded nine kills in the loss for SJSU. Lousi also had six digs and a service ace, while Nelson had a team-best three service aces and four digs.
UNLV hit .407 for the match while holding the Spartans to just .207. The Rebels had only seven hitting errors, while the Spartans only recorded 33 kills.
Set 1 – The Spartans jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but UNLV scored eight of the next 10 points to jump out to a 9-5 lead. The Rebels then controlled the set to win 25-17.
Set 2 – Mia Schafer recorded her only service ace on the first serve of the set, and the Spartans stayed close to the Rebels for the first half of the set. The score was tied 12-12 before UNLV scored eight of the next 11 points to lead 20-15. Trailing 21-18, Nelson recorded two of her three service aces and added a kill to tie the set at 21-21 and force a UNLV timeout. The Rebels then scored four of the next five points to win 25-22.
Set 3 – Similar to the previous two sets, the teams played close to start before UNLV made a run and won the set 25-16.
San José State is now 4-8 on the season, while UNLV stayed undefeated at 9-0. The Spartans host the final two matches of the season next week with New Mexico on Thursday and San Diego State on Saturday.
