San Jose, Calif.—The San José State women's tennis kept the undefeated season and best start in school history intact with a 4-3 win over Wyoming Friday afternoon at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
In a déjà vu of the team's previous match, the final point of the match went down to the final singles match of the day.
Let's review first – Wyoming won the doubles point by winning the second and third doubles matches by the exact score of 6-4. The top double match was tied at 6-6 when the point was decided, and the match was not finished.
Singles play started with Spartan Raquel Villan Pereira, playing in the fifth position, winning her match 6-2, 6-2, to tie the score at 1-1. Irena Muradyan followed with a straight-sets win at #3, 6-3, 6-1, to give SJSU the 2-1 advantage.
Wyoming then won the next two points at the fourth spot as Lara Marco Mas fell 6-2, 6-2, and second spot as Rozalina Youseva lost 6-4, 6-2.
Down 3-2, Alba Pedrero Galindo, the Spartans #1 player, won 6-4 and 6-2, to tie the match at 3-3 and leave the final point to the #6 match. Jovana Babic improved her record to 5-0 on the season with a 6-4, 6-3, win to keep the undefeated streak alive for San José State.
"As we say every match, it is taking every player to contribute to the win. Jovana has been out of the lineup with an injury and had an opportunity to jump into the lineup today. She did what she always does and kept calm.," said Spartan head coach Chad Skorupka.
"Wyoming is a good team, competes well, and it shows. In doubles, we self-destructed a little bit. We let some leads slip away and didn't take advantage of the opportunities to close out the match.
"I think our strength right now is our singles play. We need to step up and compete better to accomplish our goals, especially with our upcoming matches next week."
With the match against Colorado State canceled for this Sunday, the next action for the Spartan team is next Thursday, April 1, against Nevada at 12 p.m., at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
