Two Spartans In Top-10, SJSU Tied for Third At PING/ASU Invitational

Phoenix, Ariz.—Antonia Malate and Louisa Carlbom each shot a one-under 71 in the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational and are tied for ninth place as the San José State women's golf team is tied for third with Michigan and Denver.
 
Malate started her round with three consecutive birdies and made four birdies in her first five holes to go four under for her round. She made two bogeys and was two-under at the turn. Malate then made pars on eight of her final nine holes to finish with her 71.
 
Carlbom shot even par over her first holes, making two birdies, five pars and two bogeys. After a bogey on #10, she made birdies on #12 and #16 and par on the other six holes to record her 71, tying for her low round of the season.
 
Kajsa Arwefjäll shot a one-over 73 and is tied for 26th. She was one-under through four holes, but fell to two-over with consecutive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes. Arwefjäll started the back-nine with back-to-back birdies on #10 and #11, then made six consecutive pars and finished with a bogey on her final hole.
 
Jordyn Parr recorded a four-over 76 and is tied for 55th. She shot two-over par for her first nine holes with two birdies made. Parr started the final nine holes by making seven consecutive pars, but finished with back-to-back bogeys.
 
Jadan Gonzalez had a nine-over 81 and is tied for 81st. She made a birdie and nine pars during her round.
 
The Spartans shot a three-over 291 and are tied for third with Michigan and Denver. Stanford leads the tournament at four-under 284, followed closely by Arizona State at three-under 283.
 
Second round action for the Spartans begins at 8:45 a.m. as they play with Denver and Arizona.
