Los Angeles, Calif.----- Emma Hank and Clarissa Wandinger each scored a season-high two goals for #17-ranked San Jose State University, but #1-ranked USC defeated the Spartans, 12-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo macth.
The Spartans (1-7, 0-4 MPSF) also got a goal from Lili Urvari to close out their second consecutive weekend on the road in conference action against a top-four ranked team nationally.
Like the previous day when USC (10-0, 4-0 MPSF) won 11-5, the Trojans scored the first goals of the match before Hank put the Spartans on the scoreboard in the second quarter and went into halftime with a seven-goal advantage.
For Hank, the USC match was her first multi-goal performance at the major college level as she finished with three goals for the weekend. Wandinger notched her second two-goal contribution as a Spartan and first since a 2020 win over Sonoma State.
San Jose State had chances to get in the scoring column earlier, but did not convert on six power-play opportunities and one 5-meter penalty shot in the first half. The Spartans did go 3-for-5 on second half power plays and outshot the Trojans, 30-21, for the match.
Elaina Davey played the entire match in goal for the Spartans for the second day in a row and was credited with five saves, like she was in her starting debut the day before. The USC goalkeeper combo of Carolyne Stern playing the first three quarters and Erin Tharp in the fourth quarter combined to stop 10 Spartan shots. That was the same number of saves by Hannah Henry of the Trojans in the first meeting between these teams.
San Jose State returns to action next weekend for the first of three weekends at home. The Spartans host #3-ranked UCLA in MPSF action, Saturday, April 3, and Sunday, April 4, at 1:00 p.m. (PT) each day.
