Stanford, Calif.----- Even with its best team birdie total for any of its three rounds in the final 18 holes of The Goodwin at the Stanford Golf Course, the San Jose State University men's golf team finished in 22nd place out of 28 teams.
The Spartans had 10 birdies among the counting scores of Nate Jetter, Carl Corpus, Sean Yu and Bryce Wortman, but only managed a 15-over par 295 team score on the par 70, 6,727-yard Stanford course for an 883 total. The 295 was San Jose State's second best team score of the three rounds sandwiched in between the promising opening round score of 290 and the second round 298.
Jetter turned in the best Spartan scorecard of the final round with a two-over 72. He had the steadiest round of the day for San Jose State with 14 pars and one birdie for his low round of the tournament. Jetter finished 54 holes tied for 68th place at 220.
Carl Corpus had a season-best six birdies including three in a row and four in holes between holes #7 and #11, and finished with a three-over 73, his lowest score in the three rounds. Corpus tied for 82nd place at 222.
Sean Yu got off to a nice start with birdies on #1 and #5 to go to two-under par, but went the rest of the way without a red number and signed for a four-over 74 and a 224 total.
Bryce Wortman, whose hole-in-one got the Spartans off to a good start on March 25, birdied the 16th and 17th holes to finish at 76 after tough first 10 holes for the southpaw.
San Jose State did not count Vijay Srinivasan's 76 in the team scoring format that takes the top four scores from a five-player contingent.
Second-round leader Arizona State matched host Stanford stroke for stroke for 15 holes in the final round then pulled away and captured the team title with an 825 score. Stanford closed out the week with an 833 total for second place. Pepperdine, like San Jose State, playing its fifth competitive round in the last six days, was third at 842.
Blake Hathcoat of Saint Mary's and Nevada's Sam Harned tied for medialist honors at 10-under par 200. Harned birdied the final hole for a 67 to get to 10-under par 200. Hathcoat birdied #16 and parred the final two holes for a 68 and his 200 total.
