Chula Vista, Calif.----- Sean Yu's two-over par 74 was the best score of the day for the San Jose State University men's golf team in the first round of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
Yu's round ranged from two-over par through four holes to one-under par through 13 holes on the par 72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club course. The Spartan senior is tied for 49th place in the 112-player field.
As a team, San Jose State is tied with Northern Illinois for 18th place at 312. The University of San Diego is the first-round leader with a 283. Southern California at 285 and Nevada at 286 complete the top three teams.
Besides Yu's 74, the Spartans also counted Kristopher Styles' 76, Nate Jetter's 80, and an 82 by Vijay Srinivasan in his season debut Caleb Shetler inadvertently signed for an incorrect score and his first-round was disqualified from the team total.
Nevada's Sam Harned is the individual leader heading into the second round on March 9 with his 67. Devon Biing of UCLA, Sam Choi of New Mexico, Leon D'Souza of Southern California and Ryan Bisharat of San Diego playing as an individual entry are tied for second at 68. Twenty-six players in the 120-player field posted an 18-hole score under par. The average score in the first round was 74.74, just under three-over par.
The 54-hole tournament continues with 18 holes on March 9 and a final round of 18 holes on March 10.
