San Jose, Calif.—The streak continues, this is not a trick, as the San José State women's tennis defeated Nevada, 4-0, Thursday afternoon at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
On a warm, beautiful day in San Jose, the Spartans swept the doubles matches to win the first point of the day. Tamara Culibrk and Abla Pedrero Galindo starting the winning at 6-1. The other two doubles matches finished simultaneously, as Savannah Sendar and Lara Marco Mas won 6-2, and Rozalina Youseva and Raquel Villa Pereira won 6-1.
As the air continued to warm up during singles play, Spartan Jovana Babic made quick work of her opponent, winning 6-1, 6-0 at #6 to give SJSU a 2-0 lead. The other five singles matches were much closer as both teams battled for points.
Alba Pedrero Galindo won next at #1 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Less than five minutes later, Lara Marco Mas won 6-2, 6-3 to give San José State the 4-0 win. The other three singles matches then stopped playing as the contest was decided.
San José State is now 9-0 on the season, the best start in school history, and the longest winning streak since 2012 when the team won 12 consecutive matches during the season.
"The matches were very close today including the ones not finished. We got the results we wanted in doubles today with the switches we made. We have to keep fighting in singles, in all positions and not just one or two matches. We need to come out focused and ready to battle in what should be a hard-fought match against Fresno State on Saturday," said Spartan head coach Chad Skorupka.
The Spartans host Fresno State Saturday at noon in the team's final home contest of the 2021 season.
