#4-Cal Tops #16-Spartans, 12-7

San Jose, Calif.---- San Jose State University's Riley Agerbeek and Lili Urvari each scored two goals, but the University of California converted four 5-meter penalty shots in a 12-7 win in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo match.

The #4-ranked Golden Bears (8-4, 3-4 MPSF) were led by Brigit Mulder who scored three of her match-high five goals on penalty shots going one-on-one with Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry. Cal all four of its penalty-shot chances, an unusually high number of opportunities in a typical contest. San Jose State (1-10, 0-7 MPSF) did not have an opportunity to take a penalty shot.

Despite facing the barrage of penalty shots, Henry had another strong contest in goal for San Jose State with nine saves.

"She's such a strong goalie like I mentioned before. She taking blocks that really should be fielded by our frontline defense.  Her ability to get strong momentum stops and initiate our counter attack keeps us in games," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Beth Harberts.

Despite Cal scoring twice within the first 90 seconds for a 2-0 lead, San Jose State stayed close with first-half goals by Sophie Spivack, Clarissa Wandinger and Urvari and trailed, 5-3, with less than 1:00 to go before halftime.

Mulder's third score of the first half and her only one when the teams were at even strength came with 0:01 before halftime increasing Cal's lead to 6-3. The Spartans maintained a three-goal deficit for most of the third quarter before two Golden Bear goals late in the quarter provided a sufficient cushion the rest of the way.

Ty Supreme, Clarissa Wandinger and Sophie Spivack also scored for San Jose State. However, teammate Olga Descalzi Portell, who scored six goals on just eight shots in the previous match against UCLA, went scoreless for only the second match this season. Descalzi Portell was able to take two shots against a stubborn California defense.

The two teams conclude their weekend series at San Jose State with an April 11, 1:00 p.m. MPSF contest.
