Descalzi Portell Only Spartan Scorer In 11-2 Loss To #4-Cal

San Jose, Calif.----- Olga Descalzi Portell scored both San Jose State University goals in the first half, but it was a balanced University of California offense that pulled away for an 11-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo win.

Seven Golden Bears (9-4, 4-4 MPSF) scored as #4-ranked Cal swept the weekend series from the #16-ranked Spartans (1-11, 0-8 MPSF). California won the day before, 12-7. Kitty Lynn Joustra of Cal led all players with three goals, two of them in the second quarter.

Descalzi Portell's first goal tied the match at 1-1 and the two teams started off the second quarter with the same score. After Elli Protopapas broke the tie early in the second quarter converting a 5-meter penalty shot, Joustra scored two of her three goals on back-to-back Cal possessions giving Cal, a 4-1 lead.

Descalzi Portell's second score pulled San Jose State to a three-goal deficit, 5-2, for the last time in the match. Cecily Turner added Cal's second power play goal of the second quarter for a 6-2 halftime lead.

For the first time this season, San Jose State was shutout for an entire half of action. The Spartans' shooting percentage was a season-low 8.7 percent compared to Cal's 40.7 percent.

Goalkeeper Hannah Henry made eight saves, including one on a penalty shot for San Jose State. Cal's Cassidy Ball played the first three quarters and one possession in the fourth before yielding to Isabel Williams for the rest of the contest. Ball had four saves; Williams, two.

After playing its last nine matches against teams ranked in the top-four nationally without a win. San Jose State closes out its home schedule Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18, hosting Indiana University in a pair of MPSF matches. Saturday's contest starts at 1:00 p.m. and follows a senior day ceremony for Spartan seniors Tyanna Supreme, Emma Hank, Lili Urvari, and Sierra Painter. Sunday's match begins at 11:00 a.m.
