Logan, Utah—For the second time in nine days, the final point of a San José State women's tennis match came down to the final singles match still playing. On Sunday, Savannah Sendar shown through for the Spartans, needing three sets for the win, and gave San José State the 4-3 win over Utah State to improve the team's record to 12-0.
Sendar had not played singles since a straight-sets win on March 20. Playing at #6 singles on Sunday, Sendar won her first set 7-5, but lost the second 6-7 (3). She then won 6-1 in the third set to help the Spartans to their 12th consecutive victory this season, tying the longest winning streak in school history set in 2012.
Let's rewind to see how the Spartans got to Sendar needing the win for the match. For the fifth time this season, San José State had to win four singles matches after Utah State won the doubles points.
Irena Muradyan got the first point for SJSU as she won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, at #3 singles to improve her season record to 11-0 overall and 10-0 in the third position.
Utah State took the lead back at 2-1, as Spartan Lara Marco Mas lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
The Spartans then took a 3-2 lead as Raquel Villan Pereira and Alba Pedrero Galindo won their matches. Villan Pereira won 6-4, 6-4, at #5,and Pedrero Galindo won 6-4, 6-3 in the top position.
Utah State then tied the match at 3-3, winning the second singles match, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Spartan Rozalina Youseva. That put all the attention on the #6 singles match which Sendar won in three sets.
San José State is 12-0 on the season and 5-0 in Mountain West play. The team travels to Colorado Springs next weekend for matches against New Mexico (April 17) and Air Force (April 18).
