Spartans Unable To Avoid Series Sweep Against Broncos

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State softball was unable to avoid the series sweep to Boise State despite a late inning comeback bid, falling 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to the Broncos at the Spartan Softball Stadium.

The Spartans (4-16) were held hitless for the first five innings of the contest until pinch hitter Malia Luna took a couple swings in the box and connected on a well-struck hit that landed inside the line in right field and rolled innocently to the wall. Luna made her way to third for the triple as Rayohna Sagapolu, making her first start of the season, scooted home safely from first to plate the Spartan run.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Alyssa Graham tallied the Spartans' second hit of the game with one out on a base hit up the middle in an effort to spark a Spartan rally. Unfortunately a popup and and flyout left her aboard the bases as San Jose State dropped their sixth straight in conference play.

Starting pitcher Caroline Bowman (0-9) worked her second-straight complete game for the Spartans. The senior tallied five strikeouts and allowed four earned runs on nine knocks. On the other side of the diamond, it was Boise State's Taylor Caudill (3-4) that picked up the win after a complete game of her own that included nine strikeouts. The Broncos were led offensively by Kelsey Lalor, who started the game with a leadoff triple and finished the afternoon with three hits, two triples, and two runs scored.

The Spartans return to action next weekend with a road trip south to San Diego to take on the Aztecs of San Diego State.
