Corpus’ 68 Leads Spartans In Western Intercollegiate Golf Opening Round

Santa Cruz, Calif.----- Carl Corpus played his final 10 holes four-under par to finish with a two-under par 68 leading San Jose State University to a fifth-place tie after the opening round of the 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf men's golf tournament.
 
Corpus started his opening round with three bogeys and a birdie for his first eight holes before catching fire with an eagle on par 5, ninth hole and a birdie on the 11th to go one-under par for the first time in the tournament. His 68 was his first sub-70 score of the season and his second two-under par round of the 2020-21 season.


 
The ninth hole was a turning point for a San Jose State team that was 11-over par after eight holes. Besides Corpus' eagle-3, Kristopher Stiles and Caleb Shetler birdied the ninth hole. Stiles would finish at even par 70. Shetler his last 10 holes one-under par for a 73.
 
San Jose State also counted 75's from Nate Jetter and Bryce Wortman. Jetter was eight-over after 11 holes, but was three-under the rest of the way. Wortman dropped three shots to par on his last nine holes. The Spartans did not count Sean Yu's 76.
 
As a team, San Jose State posted an 18-hole team score of 361 and is tied with Brigham Young for fifth place. Washington took the first-round lead with an even par 350 team score in the six-player, count five scoring format.



California is second at 353. Pepperdine at 354 and defending team champion Stanford is fourth at 358 in the 13-team tournament.
 
Corpus' 68 places him in a four-way tie for third place, one shot behind co-leaders Justin Ngan of Hawaii and Cal's Finigan Tilly with scores of 67. Ngan was one of two players who was as low as four-under par in the first round.
 
Six players are tied for sixth place at one-under par 69. Five players joined Stiles at even par 70 on a day with cool coastal California temperatures and a slight early afternoon breeze.
 
            Stanford's Jake Beber-Frankel recorded the first hole-in-one of the 74th Western Intercollegiate using a 52-degree gap wedge on the par 3, 15th hole that played 122 yards.
 
            This year's Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf features players from 17 countries and 13 states.
