Spartans In Ninth At 74th Western Intercollegiate

Santa Cruz, Calif.----- San Jose State University had a rough second round as the host of 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by TopGolf men's golf tournament.

Starting the day in fifth place, the Spartans started the second round much like the first going 11-over par at the turn as a team. Unlike the first 18 holes, San Jose State was unable to make any type of comeback against par on the par 70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course designed by Alistair MacKenzie. The Spartans only had four birdies on the back nine among their five counting scores. Carl Corpus, San Jose State's low scorer in the first round had two of them during his round of 75.  The 74 by Caleb Shetler turned out to be the Spartans' low score of the round.

San Jose State finished with a 377 team score for the second round and a 738 total for 36 holes in the 13 team tournament.

Pepperdine posted a two-under par 348 second-round team score in the 6-player, score-5 format and a 702 total to move past first round leader Washington, now at 708 with 18 holes to go. Joe Highsmith led the way with a 66 and Dylan Menante added a 67 to lead the Pepperdine charge.

Stanford moved from fourth to third and is at 710. Brigham Young at 711 and California at 713 complete the top five teams.

BYU's Carson Lundell's opened the second round with a birdie and had a fiery three-hole stretch from #8 through #10 going birdie-eagle-birdie going from one-under to five-under par before finishing with a 66 to grab the second round lead. At 134, Lundell is four strokes ahead of Stanford's Karl Viilips and Pepperdine's Joe Highsmith and RJ Manke at 138. Vilips had the low round of the day with a 65 – the best individual round of the tournament.

First-round leaders Finigan Tilly of Cal and Justin Ngan of Hawaii were unable to match or break par in the second round. Tilly posted a 73 and is even par at 140 tied for ninth place. Ngan turned in a 76 and is at 143.
