Stanford, Calif.----- In the second meeting of the year and the first time in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action, the Stanford University women's water polo team scored 16 times against San José State University. The result was the same as the #2-ranked Cardinal defeated the #16-ranked Spartans, 16-5.
Four Spartans, Lili Urvari, Sierra Painter, Ty Supreme, and Riley Agerbeek, scored goals. Supreme's two third-quarter scores were her third two-goal match of the season. But together, the Spartan scoring was only good enough to match the five-goal outburst by Stanford's Hannah Shabb, the leading goal scorer in the match.
Sarah Klass and Chloe Harbilas each added three goals in support of Shabb. The Cardinal had an exceptionally good day shooting the ball converting 55.2 percent of their shots compared to 20.8 percent by San Jose State.
Stanford (9-4, 7-4 MPSF) scored the first three goals of the match and never trailed. Agerbeek's goal at 2:50 in the first quarter put the Spartans on the scoreboard at the 2:50 mark.
Hannah Henry played the first three quarters in goal for San Jose State and was credited with four saves. Often, crisp Stanford passing, particularly inside, left the Spartan goalkeeper vulnerable to any shot of the Cardinal's choosing. Elaina Davey played goal the fourth quarter for San Jose State and stopped two shots including a 5-meter penalty shot attempt by Stanford's Madison Stamen.
The two teams wrap up the regular season against each other, Sunday, April 25, in a 1:00 p.m. at the Avery Aquatics Stadium on the Stanford campus. The MPSF match will be streamed live on the Pac-12 Network.
