Las Vegas, Nev.—For the second time in school history, the San José State women's tennis team clinched a Mountain West Championship in Las Vegas. This time, the opponent was San Diego State who the Spartans defeated 4-1 early Saturday afternoon for the 2021 Mountain West title.
The Spartans like clinching MW Championships inside the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The 2017 team defeated UNLV 4-0 in the championship match of the tournament that year for the team's first MW title.
On Saturday, it took a team effort again. The team fell in doubles as San Diego State won the first point of the match. The Spartans did not panic though as the team has not won the doubles point in six of the team's eight conference wins this season.
Raquel Villan Pereira got the Spartans' first point with a 6-2, 6-1, win at #5, followed closely by Alba Pedrero Galindo winning 6-0, 6-3, and Irena Muradyan winning 6-2, 6-3.
The Spartans needed just one more point from the three remaining singles matches, and freshman Jovana Babic clinched the match and MW title with a 6-2, 6-1.
San José State improves to 15-1 on the season and 8-1 MW record. The Spartans earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their opponent during the women's tennis selection show on Monday, May 3 at 3 p.m. PT on NCAA.com.
