#16-Spartans Swept By #2-Stanford, 16-4

Stanford, Calif.--- San Jose State University's Tyanna Supreme and Olga Descalzi Portell each scored twice, but #2-ranked Stanford University defeated the Spartans, 16-4, in the final Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular-season women's water polo match for both teams.

The Cardinal (10-4, 8-4 MPSF) broke open a 2-2 tie near the end of the first quarter with four consecutive goals in a 2:25 span for a 6-2 second-quarter lead and kept control of the match the rest of the way. For the third time this season and the second in two days, Stanford scored 16 goals against the #16-ranked Spartans. On April 24, the Cardinal posted a 16-5 win over the Spartans.

Descalzi Portell's first goal of the match at 3:28 of the first quarter cut the San Jose State deficit in half to 2-1. On the Spartans' next possession, Supreme drew a 5-meter penalty shot opportunity and converted for her first of two scores at 2:28 to tie the match. Supreme also scored twice in the April 24 loss to Stanford, 16-5.

Arguably, Hannah Henry had one of her best matches of the season in goal for San Jose State with 11 saves in only three quarters of action. It was her third double-digit save performance of the season and second against the Cardinal. When the teams met for a March 13 non-conference match-up, Henry was credited with a season-high 14 saves.

Elaina Davey played the fourth quarter in goal for the Spartans and stopped two shots.

Stanford's Hannah Shabb led all players in goal scoring with three. Ten Cardinal players scored in the match.

San Jose State now turns its sights on the 2021 MPSF Tournament, April 30 – May 2, hosted by Arizona State. The Spartans begin the three-day tournament as the #7-seed with #2-seed UCLA as their first opponent on April 30, at 9:00 a.m. A San Jose State win guarantees matches on May 1 and May 2. A Spartan loss means the final match of the season will be on May 1 against the loser of the Stanford-Indiana match-up.
