Spartan Offense Shines Despite Defeat

San José, Calif. – The San José State offense impressed despite taking an 8-7 loss in Sunday's series finale against Fresno State at Excite Ballpark.

The Spartans (4-10, 2-5 Mountain West) totaled 12 hits on the day and put up a pair of three-run innings on the day. The game marked the final of a four-game set with the Bulldogs.

Senior Reece Hernandez enjoyed the best performance of his Spartan career on the afternoon, going 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI while scoring a pair of runs himself.

The first of SJSU's three-run frames came in the bottom of the second inning as senior Connor Konishi worked a five-pitch walk to start things off for the home team. Konishi would come around to score on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Hernandez and the club doubled its advantage two batters later when senior Jack Colette scored on a throwing error by the Bulldog pitcher.

Another error - this one coming on a fly ball lifted to right field by Kai Saterstrom - brought in freshman Jackson Forbes to extend San José State's lead to 3-0.

Fresno State battled back and would lead 7-3 before it was the Spartans turn to hit the comeback trail. They added a run on a Saterstrom RBI single in the sixth, then added three more in the seventh on a 2-RBI single for Hernandez and an RBI single to center off the bat of Forbes.

SJSU was able to get the tying run to second base in the bottom half of the ninth but it was the Bulldogs who ultimately escaped with the 8-7 victory.

Three pitchers toed the rubber for San José State on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Corey Sanchez got the start and struck out four in four innings of work while right-handers Josh Zanger and Darren Jansen appeared in relief.

The Spartans will look to bounce back as they open a 13-game road trip on Tuesday at Oregon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at PK Park in Eugene.
