Tempe, Ariz.----- UCLA broke open a 2-2 tie midway through the first quarter with an 8-1 rally to halftime in a 20-5 victory over San Jose State University in an opening round Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo tournament match.
Clarissa Wandinger, on a power play, and Ty Supreme scored in the first 4:12 of the match for the seventh-seeded Spartans (2-15) before the Bruins (12-3) pulled away. UCLA's Bella Baia scored four of her match-high five goals during the rally.
Riley Agerbeek was the only San Jose State player to score more than once with a goal in each half. Ryan Lucchesi accounted for the team's fifth and final goal. After scoring six goals on eight shots against UCLA the last time these teams met in regular season conference action, Olga Descalzi Portell, the Spartans' leading scorer, was limited to three shot attempts and was scoreless. She did assist on two San Jose State goals.
The Spartans continue MPSF Tournament play on May 1 taking on sixth-seed Indiana in the sixth-place match-up at 9:00 a.m. (MST). The two teams split a pair of regular-season contests. Indiana posted a 12-8 victory followed by a San Jose State 9-8 comeback win the next day to wrap up the MPSF conference series.
The winner of the San Jose State-Indiana match advances to a May 2 contest for fifth place The loser finishes as the tournament's seventh-place team.
