SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State women's soccer goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre has been named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 5. The conference made the announcement on Monday.
Aguirre, a junior from Corona, Calif., is coming off a two-game home stand in which she posted back-to-back shutouts over Boise State and Nevada. She made a total of six saves between the contests, including four against the Broncos.
"I'm thrilled that Zoe was recognized for Defensive Player of the Week, but as we have said these past seven years, these awards are a reflection of not only our goalkeeper, but also our back line and entire team defense," head coach Lauren Hanson said. "It takes 11 players on the field to get a shut out, and I'm incredibly proud of their commitment to this the past two games."
Aguirre and the Spartan Defense played lights out in both matches. The back line held both opposing offensive attacks in check, but in the few chances they allowed, Aguirre was ready for them. The clean sheets were the first for Aguirre in her Spartan Career, and with four saves against the Broncos, she helped the Spartans defeat Boise State for the first time in regulation since September 24, 2017.
This is the first Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week Award for Aguirre and the first for the Spartans since Paige Simoneau won the award on October 29, 2018.
The Spartans will wrap up the season on Saturday on the road against Fresno State.
