This Week in Spartan Athletics - April 5-11

This Week in San José State Athletics is here to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Please note - In accordance with the SJSU Adapt Plan that restricts visitors to campus facilities, the San José State University Athletics Department will continue the policy of no fans at home sporting events for the remainder of the 2021 spring semester.
 
San José State is currently in "Phase 2: Modified Campus" which restricts visitors to campus facilities to essential staff or those who need to work on campus for instructional purposes.

Women's Tennis (10-0)
This Week: The Spartans go on the road for the first of three weekends of road Mountain West matches. This week, the team travels to Logan, Utah, for matches against Boise State on Saturday and Utah State on Sunday.

Last Week:  The Spartans went 2-0 last weekend, defeating Nevada, 4-1, and Fresno State, 4-3.

Spartan Fact: San José State won the doubles point against Nevada and got singles wins from Jovana Babic, Alba Pedrero Galindo and Lara Marco Mas for the team's ninth win of the season.

Spartan Fact #2: The Fresno State contest took 4½ hours to play and came down to the #2 singles match between Spartan Rozalina Youseva and Bulldog Cristina Flaquer. The first set took two hours to play and went to tiebreaker before Youseva won 7-6 (4). The second set then took over an hour and half before Youseva won 7-5 to clinch the win for the Spartans and keep the undefeated season alive.

Men's Soccer (4-1-2, 4-1-2 WAC)
This Week: The Spartans are in action twice this week, hosting both UNLV and Seattle University with WAC regular season title implications on the line.

Last Week: San Jose State went 2-0 last week, earning a pair of overtime victories at Utah Valley (3-2) and back home against Incarnate Word (2-1). 

Spartan Fact: Senior Ruid Castro was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season. He is the first Spartan to earn multiple weekly awards from the conference office since Jorge Martinez back in 2000.

Women's Soccer (2-6-1, 2-6-1)
This Week: The Spartans wrap up the season with a trip to Fresno to take on the Bulldogs of Fresno State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Last Week: SJSU found its spark late and swept their final two home matches with a pair of shutouts over Boise State and Nevada.

Spartan Facts: Junior goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after recording a pair of shutouts.

Baseball (3-4, 1-2 MW)
This Week: The Spartans return to action for four road contests this week, taking on San Francisco on Tuesday before heading to New Mexico for games on Saturday and Sunday. 

Last Week: San Jose State split its four contests last week with its two wins coming in impressive fashion. The Spartans topped California 10-7 on Tuesday and rolled to a 10-2 victory on Friday at Cal Poly.

Spartan Fact: In Tuesday's win over the Golden Bears, reliever Trevor Ernt became the first Spartan to go 6+ innings out of the bullpen since May 4, 2016 (Zach Wallace vs. Grand Canyon).

Women's Golf
This Week: The Spartans are currently playing at the Silverado Showdown in Napa. The team is tied for sixth after the first round, and Louisa Carlbom and Jadan Gonzalez are tied for 13th individually.

Last Week: The Spartans did not compete

Spartan Fact: This is the final competition for the team before the Mountain West Championships, April 20-21.

This Week:  The team is off this week preparing for next week's tournament

Spartan Fact: The 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf, April 12-14, at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif., is two weeks away. The GOLF Channel will provide three hours of live coverage each day. Monday and Tuesday coverage begins at 4:00 p.m. (PT)/7:00 p.m. (ET). Wednesday's live coverage starts at 1:00 p.m. (PT)/4:00 p.m. (ET). Fifteen teams and 96 players are competing for team and individual honors.

Softball (4-13, 0-3)
This Week: The Spartans host Boise State this weekend for three games at the Spartan Softball Stadium.

Last Week: SJSU was on a pause due to non-COVID related issues within the program. 

Spartan Fact: Janessa Lozano and Alyssa Graham rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the Mountain West in batting average. Lozano is hitting at a .349 clip while Graham is just behind at .348.

This Week: No action. 

Last Week: Senior Dariya Greene set a school record in the women's 400m and freshman Mehki Evans-Bey placed second in the men's 400m, highlighting a solid week for the Spartans against some of the nation's top competition at the Stanford Invitational. 

Spartan Fact: Just two meets remain for San Jose State before the program heads to the Mountain West Championships.

Beach Volleyball (0-0)
This Week: The beach volleyball team makes their regular-season debut this weekend with two duals at UC Davis on Sunday against Saint Mary's and the Aggies.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans were 9-2 during the 2020 season before play was stopped due to COVID-19.

Women's Water Polo (1-9, 0-6 MPSF)
Last Week: The Spartans lost a pair of matches to #3-UCLA, 18-6 and 17-11.

This Week: San José State hosts California in a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches on Saturday and Sunday.
 
Spartan Fact: The Spartans' 11 goals in the Sunday match with #3-UCLA were the most goals San Jose State scored in one match in the all-time series against the Bruins. Olga Descalzi Portell matched her personal single-match career scoring high of six goals vs. UCLA on Sunday. Since 2014, Descalzi Portell became the first UCLA opponent to score six or more goals  in one contest.

Volleyball (7-9, 7-9)
This Week: The Spartans play the final two matches of the season this week - at Utah State on Thursday and at Wyoming on Saturday.

Last Week: The Spartans went 1-1 last week, losing at Utah State, 3-1, but bounced back and won at Wyoming, 3-2. It was the first win for the Spartans in Laramie since 1987.

Spartan Fact: San José State was the only team in the Mountain West to play all 16 matches this season without a stop during the season.
