Descalzi Portell Closes Spartans' Season With "Hat Trick"

Tempe, Ariz.----- Despite Olga Descalzi Portell's third match of the season scoring three or more goals for the San Jose State University women's water polo team, the Spartans' season ended on the second day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament in a 7-6 loss to Indiana.

The Hoosiers (10-16) overcame a 4-2 halftime deficit and scored the game-winning goal with 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter on a shot by Zoe Crouch, who matched Descalzi Portell for match-high scoring honors with three. San Jose State (2-16) had three possessions including a power-play to tie the match at 7-7 and possibly go into overtime, but was unable to score.

Settling for seventh place in the MPSF Tournament, the Spartans and Hoosiers played their second one-goal outcome decided in the fourth quarter in two weekends. San Jose State defeated Indiana, 9-8, in its final home match on April 18.

The Spartans scored four consecutive times in the first half for a 4-1 lead before a Couch goal cut the margin to 4-2 going into halftime. Indiana pulled even with San Jose State at 4-4 midway through the third quarter before the teams stayed tied at 5-5 and 6-6. A key point in the match was Hoosiers goalkeeper Mary Askew scoring a goal for the second time against the Spartans this season to give Indiana a 6-5 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

Descalzi Portell's third goal tied the match for the final time at the 4:02 mark of the fourth quarter before Crouch's match winner two Indiana possessions later.

Neither team had success with its power play. San Jose State was 0-for-8 and Indiana was 1-for-8. Crouch was one of five Indiana players one foul away from fouling out, but managed to stay in the contest long enough to end the Spartans' season.

San Jose State goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with 10 saves. Indiana's Askew stopped 11 Spartan shots on goal.
