Spartans 7th At Mountain West Championships

Tucson, Ariz.----- The steady play of San Jose State University's Carl Corpus was one of the Spartan highlights of the first two rounds of the Mountain West Men's Golf Championships.

Corpus' even par total of 144 on the par 72, 7,194-yard Omni Tucson National course reflects his tournament leading 30 pars for the first 36 holes of the 54-hole championship. The sophomore from the Philippines completed rounds of 73 and 71 and is in a tie for 12th place in the 55-player field. UNLV's Jack Trent leads all players with a six-under par 138 on back-to-back 69's.

Corpus' second-round 71 was one of only 13 rounds under par in the afternoon 18 holes in which all players started from the 10th tee. Freshman Kristopher Stiles signed for San Jose State's low score in the afternoon with a two-under par 70 and a 146 total. Stiles was as low as three-under par after an eagle on #2, his 11th hole of his second round. He played the eight par-5 holes on the day at seven-under par, the same as individual tournament leader Trent from UNLV.

Sophomore Caleb Shetler posted the best Spartan individual score in the morning round at even par 72, but dropped to a 78 in the afternoon.

As a team, San Jose State is in seventh place in the 11-team tournament with a 587 score. Boise State at 570 holds the team lead. San Diego State at 571, UNLV at 573, Nevada at 574 and New Mexico, fifth at 576, definitely are still in contention for the team championship. The Spartans have sixth place Colorado State in their sights at 582, but also have Fresno State at 588 and Wyoming at 589 very close behind.

The 54-hole championship concludes with 18 holes on May 1. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.
