Spartans Cash In On High Jump To Lead Program Up Championship Scoreboard

Clovis, Calif. - Freshman Tyler Cash became the men's program's first outdoor conference high jump champion in 41 years to highlight San José State's performance on Friday at the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships. 

Cash placed first with a mark of 2.09m in Clovis, earning the men's team 10 points in the process. The tally would ultimately equal 24 points for a fifth place standing at the end of the day. 
 



On the women's side, the Spartans will enter the final day of the championships in 11th place with a total of five points. Sophomore Mahkaia Lee had the team's best performance of the day, tallying all five points for SJSU with her fourth-place finish in the long jump. 

MEET NOTES - FRIDAY

- Lee finished with a mark of 5.83m in the long jump to lead the Spartans. 

- Senior Kylia Smith also competed in the event and tallied a mark of 5.75m. 

- Diamond Tabron qualified for both the 100 hurdle and 400 hurdle finals with a strong performance on Friday. Her time of 14.37 in the 100 was a personal record. 

- Roman Johnson and Jalen Adams both ran excellent races in the 100m prelims and qualified for Saturday's finals. Johnson placed first (10.56 seconds) and Adams' time of 10.70 seconds was a personal best. 

- Sophie Liao and Kylia Smith both qualified for the 100m finals, finishing with times of 11.71 seconds and 11.78 seconds, respectively. Liao's mark of 11.71 seconds set a new school record, topping the previous mark of 11.76 that belonged to Caitlin Wilson (2016 Payton Jordan Invitational). 

- Sophomore Sydney Bentley shined in the women's 400m dash prelims, qualifying for tomorrow's finals with a time of 55.13 seconds. 

- Senior Daryia Greene will also be running the 400m dash finals after posting a mark of 55.56. 
 


- Greene set a school record in the women's 200m qualifier with a mark of 23.84, topping Caitlin Wilson's previous best of 24.14 seconds (2015 Beach Invitational). 

- Cash and freshman Kyle Jankans (2.05m) finished one-two in the men's high jump to earn a total of 18 points for the Spartans. Cash's individual conference championship in the event is the program's first since Thurlis Gibbs won PCAA Championship in 1980. 

- Thrower Bryan Quintero earned the program four points in the hammer throw with his mark of 55.91m. The mark has Quintero slotted at No. 7 on the program's all-time list. 

- Sophomore Jacob Lopez added two additional points in the shot put after hitting a mark of 15.48m. Ty Seligman and Matheu Johnson also competed in the event, posting marks of 13.76 and 13.26, respectively.
