Late Rally Pushes Lobos Past Spartans On Senior Day

San José, Calif. – San José State looked sharp at times on Sunday but was unable to parlay a 4-3 lead into a victory in its series finale against New Mexico.

The Lobos ultimately prevailed on Senior Day at Excite Ballpark, earning an 8-4 win on a sun-soaked, blustery afternoon. The contest marked the final Spartan home game of the 2021 season.

Seniors Connor Konishi and Santiago Cantu shined offensively as the pair went 2-for-3 at the plate. Cantu ended the day with one RBI while Cantu crossed home plate himself for one run, the sequence coming on a Cantu RBI double in the fourth.

Senior Max Flower had his best performance in a Spartan uniform on Sunday, notching three RBI with a bases-clearing double in the bottom half of the fifth.

Flower also impressed out of the bullpen, taking to the mound for one inning without allowing an earned run.

Sophomore Corey Sanchez got the start on the mound for SJSU and threw 4.1 innings. Sanchez struck out the first batter of the game and faced the minimum in the top of the third.

Darren Jansen also appeared in relief in the series finale, striking out a pair in 3.2 innings of work.

First baseman Ruben Ibarra extended his hit streak to four games, marking the team's longest current hitting streak. Ibarra went 2-for-4 on the day, notching one single and a double.

SJSU will look to get back in the win column when it meets Nevada in Reno on Friday night for the first of four games to close out the 2021 campaign. First pitch of game one is set for 6:00 p.m. at Peccole Park.
