Women's Tennis To Face 16-seed California In First Round of NCAA Championship

Indianapolis, Ind.—For the third time in school history, the San José State women's tennis team will compete in the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship as the Spartans play at California this Friday, May 7, at 1 p.m., inside the Hellman Tennis Complex on the Cal campus.

The Spartans (15-1) earned the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after winning the Mountain West championship with an 8-1 conference record. California (17-6) won the Pac-12 tournament championship last week over top-seeded UCLA.

In a déjà vu of sorts, the two teams played each other the last time the Spartans were in the NCAA Championship. In 2017, California won the meeting, 4-0, in Berkeley. Current Spartan Tamara Culibrk played both singles and doubles that day for SJSU.

The winner of the San José State-California match faces the winner of Kentucky-Syracuse on Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. The 16 regional winners advance to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, where teams will compete for the national championship May 16-22.
