San José State women's tennis player Irena Muradyan will represent Armenia at the 2021 Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas.
Muradyan and the Armenian team will play three matches in Pool D of Group III, consisting of nations from Europe and Africa. The team will face Ireland, Ghana and Iceland with play beginning on Tuesday, June 15, at the SEB Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. Muradyan will play number-two singles for Armenia.
Formerly known as the Fed Cup, this major global team competition has a new finals format for 2021. The top-12 nations will compete for one week in Budapest to become world champions and will award the biggest annual prize fund in women's team sports.
Muradyan just finished her freshman season at San José State where she compiled a 14-1 singles record including 13-1 at #3 singles. The Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year started the season by winning 12 of her first 13 matches.
UPDATE 6/15/21 - Irena won her match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, and Armenia defeated Iceland 3-0. The team plays Ghana on Wednesday, June 15.
