Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic Tennis Returns To San José State

SAN JOSÉ, CA (June 2, 2021) – The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic will welcome back the world's best women's tennis stars as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and its place in history as the longest running women's only tennis tournament in the world. 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, and 2017 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic champion Madison Keys have all announced early they will play in the 2021 event, August 2-8, on the campus of San José State University.
 
The full player field was announced on June 22, 2021 and includes 10 seeded players for this year's Wimbledon.
 
Co-founded by the legendary sportswoman, visionary, and activist Billie Jean King, the tournament was the first event of the historic 1971 women's professional tennis tour which was a precursor to the WTA. Its list of past champions reads like a who's who of women's tennis including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.

Owned and operated by IMG, the tournament features a 28-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw and serves as the opening women's event of the US Open Series.

"This is a very special year for this historic event, and with the likes of Sofia Kenin, Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens already committed to play, we expect to have one of the summer's strongest player fields."
 
Kenin will be making her second trip ever to San Jose and is currently ranked No. 5 in the world. She has captured five career WTA singles titles, including her first career Grand Slam title last year, at the 2020 Australian Open. In addition to her win in Melbourne she also reached the final at Roland Garros in 2020.
 
Keys, the 2017 tournament champion, has captured five career WTA singles titles and was a finalist at the 2017 US Open. Currently ranked No. 24 in the world, Keys is making her fourth appearance at the event.
 
Stephens, a former World No. 3, has won six career WTA singles titles including the 2017 US Open. Stephens, who also advanced the French Open final in 2018, is returning to the Bay Area for the first time since 2012.
