DENVER - Andy Barajas, Jered Mariani, Willy Miranda, Josh Redfield, David Sweeney and Finlay Wood have all been named as Academic All-Western Athletic Conference honorees for the 2020-21 men's soccer season.
The six recipients match a program record for most honorees in a single season (also had six on the 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2015 campaigns).
"I am really pleased for these players being recognized for their academic excellence," says head coach SImon Tobin. "It was a tough year for everyone with lots of challenges and these student-athletes performed with excellence both on the field and in the classroom."
This marks the second straight season in which Mariani and Miranda have been named to the Academic All-WAC team. Barajas, Redfield, Sweeney and Wood are all first-time honorees.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at a least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average, have at least one year at the nominating institution and participate in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
San José State enjoyed success both in the classroom and on the pitch this season, earning the program's best record in 21 years with a mark of 5-1-3. Seven Spartans earned All-WAC honors back in April, with Max Allen and Rudi Castro collecting first team accolades.
Tobin has now seen 26 of his players earn Academic All-WAC honors since taking over at the helm of the Spartans in 2014. The coach had racked up 348 career victories on the field, ranking at No. 10 among active coaches in all of Division I.
