Fort Worth, Texas ---- San Jose State University quarterback Nick Starkel is one of 30 signal callers named to the 2021 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list.
Named to the watch list based on career performance, the Spartans' #1 quarterback led San José State to the 2020 Mountain West championship. Starkel threw for 2,174 yards and 17 touchdowns as the Spartans finished with a 7-1 win-loss record, the third best season winning percentage (.875) in school history, and a 24th national ranking in the final Associated Press college football poll.
Besides receiving second-team All-Mountain West honors, Starkel was named to the Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2020. He was listed for the weekly Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 after throwing for a single-game career-high five touchdown passes and 467 yards in a 38-21 win over New Mexico.
The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the longest standing national college quarterback award.
Based on voting on social media platforms and the ballots from a national selection committee, sixteen semifinalists will be named on November 8. Three finalists will be announced two weeks later on November 22. The 2021 award winner will be revealed on Thursday, December 9, during the Home Depot College Football Awards program on ESPN.
The 45th annual Davey O'Brien Awards dinner is scheduled for February 21, 2022, in Fort Worth, Texas, 30 miles away from Starkel's hometown of Argyle, Texas.
For the Spartan quarterback, the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list is the second honor in two days in which he is named as a leading candidate for a major award. At the beginning of the week, he was named to the Maxwell Award watch list by the Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, Pa.
