TOKYO - Great players make great plays when they matter most. That's exactly what former San Jose State Softball infielder Emma Entzminger did last night for Team Canada in the bronze medal game of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. With two outs in the second inning, Entzminger, who entered the game with one hit in the tournament, delivered a well-placed single to left field to plate the first two runs of the game and give Canada a 2-0 advantage. The Canadian National Team would go on to win the contest over Mexico, 3-2, as they captured their first-ever Olympic Medal in softball.
Emma Entzminger played for the Spartans from 2015-18
Entzminger, who started every game at third base, became the first Spartan since Travis Stevens (Silver in Judo, 2016) to win an Olympic Medal. The Victoria, British Columbia product finished the 2020 Olympic Games with two hits, three RBI and a stolen base. Her opponent during Monday's bronze medal game featured a fellow former Spartan, Suzy Brookshire. Brookshire also came up big for her country, delivering a 2-out single in the fifth inning to drive in the tying run. When the dust settled, former Spartans had accounted for three of the game's five runs.
Suzy Brookshire was an All-MW selection in her lone season with the Spartans
Brookshire had a great Olympics as a whole for Team Mexico, finishing with four hits, two RBI, three runs scored, a double and a triple.
Yet another former Spartan, Michelle Cox, also participated in the tournament for Team Australia. She was responsible for scoring the first run of the 2020 Olympic Games in the opening game against future Gold Medalist Japan.
Michelle Cox holds the SJSU school record for career runs scored (164)
