Spartans' Scrimmage At Humboldt State Closed; Still Available On Livestream

The San Jose State University football team will conclude its second season of preseason training at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., with its first intrasquad scrimmage, Saturday, August 7.

The expected 90-minute scrimmage is scheduled to kickoff at 6:00 p.m. in the Redwood Bowl on the Humboldt State campus.

Due to a recent surge of COVID-19 cases in Humboldt County, Humboldt State and San Jose State announced jointly on August 4 the weekend scrimmage will be a closed event to the public and the media.

One Spartan Nation and San Jose State fans can tune in to a live stream on the San Jose State University Athletics Twitter account, @SJSUAthletics, beginning at 6:00 p.m. (PT) for the play-by-play provided by Justin Allegri, Voice of the Spartans.

"We want to thank the Humboldt State University administration led by Dr. Tom Jackson and Athletics Director Cooper Jones for allowing us to return to this beautiful campus and begin our preseason preparation for the 2021 season. The hospitality, genuine warmth, and service by everyone here is unbelievable. It's been another awesome experience for us," said San Jose State football head coach Brent Brennan, the 2020 Mountain West Coach of the Year.

The Spartans and Humboldt State reached an agreement for the football team's return since San Jose State University is hosting the Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) 50th annual Mubadala Silicon Valley tournament on many of the same campus facilities the football team would be using under regular circumstances.

"We planned our practice calendar for a Saturday evening scrimmage to give 'One Spartan Nation' and the local community an opportunity to see college football in person. And, this scrimmage is one more opportunity to say 'thank you' to everybody who made our trip possible and allowed us to stay on schedule in preparation for our August 28 season opener," Brennan added.

San Jose State competes in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of college football and is the defending champion of the 12-team Mountain West after finishing the 2020 season with an overall 7-1 win-loss record and ranked 24th nationally in the final Associated Press poll. The Spartans have 23 returning starters among 62 overall letter winners from the 2020 team.
