Spartans Fall to No. 2 Santa Clara In Season Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif.  - San Jose State women's soccer kicked off their 2021 campaign with a quick trip up the road to take on the defending national champion No. 2 Santa Clara Broncos on Thursday evening. The Spartans, with five freshman in the starting lineup, fought for the full 90-minute affair before ultimately dropping a 3-0 final. Despite the loss, the talent of the young program was apparent for every spectator amongst the 904 announced, which included an outstanding turnout by San Jose State student-athletes showing their support for their fellow Spartans.

  • Eight Spartan newcomers saw the pitch for their San Jose State debuts.
  • The freshman goalkeeping duo of Autum Monty and Shayla Sugai combined for 10 saves in the effort. Sugai entered the net for the second period and finished with seven saves while surrendering just one goal.
  • Sophomore Evan House, an All-MW Newcomer as a freshman, had the Spartans best scoring chances with a pair of on-goal shots in the opening period.

San Jose State returns to the pitch next Thursday, August 26, for their home-opener against the University of San Francisco.
