SAN JOSE, Calif. - Freshman goalkeeper Shayla Sugai had another solid night in the net making four saves in her first collegiate start in San Jose State's home-opener against the University of San Francisco. The Oahu, Hawai'i product and the Spartan Defense bounced back after allowing two early goals to the Dons to finish the night with a shutout in the final 45 minutes of play. The Spartans (0-2-0) now turn their attention to UC Santa Barbara, who visits the South Bay for a noon kick inside the Spartan Soccer Complex on Sunday, August 29.
First Touches
- After USF (1-0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first half, the Spartans fared much better in the second period to keep things competitive right up to the final whistle. Sugai made a pair of saves in the final 45:00 on the lone two on-goal attempts that the Spartan back line allowed.
- The Spartan Offense also showed major signs of improvement after halftime with three shots on-goal in the second half.
- USF's goals came in the 11th and 39th minutes of the opening half.
- The Spartans have six nonconference matches remaining - three on the road and three from the comfort of home.
- As always, the Spartans received tremendous support from the SJSU Faithful with an annouced attendance of 606 for the evening.
