Offense Delivers As Spartans Down UCSB, 3-1

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Party like its 1998! Behind goals from Evan House, Taylor Phillips and Kiana Miyazato, San Jose State women's soccer not only picked up their first win of the season, but did so over an opponent that they had not defeated since September 13, 1998. The Spartans took down UC Santa Barbara in a 3-1 final to improve to 1-2-0 on the young season. The win also featured one of the best offensive performances for the Spartans of the last five seasons with SJSU scoring three goals for the first time since October 27, 2017 (3-1 vs. Air Force).

First Touches

  • Sophomore Evan House opened the scoring for both the season and the match for SJSU in the 19th minute for her second career goal. The Visalia native rebounded a defection inside the box and put an untouched lob into the left side of the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
  • Freshman Taylor Phillips and junior transfer Kiana Miyazato each scored their first career goals in a Spartan Kit.
  • Phillips made an incredibly difficult shot look easy as she buried a long-range attempt just in the right spot between the keeper's hands and crossbar.
  • Miyazato was called to take a penalty kick inside the 74th minute and made it look easy as she froze UCSB's keeper and gave the Spartans the decisive 3-1 advantage.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Shayla Sugai bounced back from allowing an opening half goal to make three total saves.
  • The shot distribution was evenly matched with the Gauchos attempting 12 shots to the Spartans' 11. San Jose State edged UCSB in shots on goal 5-4.
  • The Spartans had six corner kicks against the Gauchos' three, five of which came in the second period.

The Spartans have a two-game road swing in the state of Utah next week beginning with a trip to Cedar City to take on Southern Utah on Friday at 4:05 p.m. local time (3:05 PT). SJSU will then head over to Orem for a Monday match against Utah Valley.
