Volleyball Sweeps Portland State

Portland, Ore.—Haylee Nelson led the Spartan hitting attack as she hit .417 for the match to help lead the San José State volleyball team swept Portland State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-23) Sunday afternoon.
 
Nelson recorded just one hitting error in the three sets (11-1-24) as she and Latahevai Lousi each recorded 11 kills to lead the team. Nelson also had her second double-double of the season with 12 digs and added four aces and two blocks in the win.
 
•Double-digit service aces again for the Spartans as the team had 11 in the win. Nelson led the team with four aces, three coming in set two when the team jumped out to a 10-0 lead. The team had 12 aces in the win over Santa Clara on Friday.
 
•The Spartans recorded four solo blocks for the second consecutive match. Lousi led the team with two, while Ryann Thomison and Nelson recorded one. The team had a season-best seven team blocks in the win, led by Thomison with three.
 
•Mia Schafer recorded 34 assists, three aces and seven digs in the win. Sarah Smevog led the team with 14 digs.
 
•The Spartans hit a season-best .307 for the match.
 

 
Match Summary
Set 1 – The two teams battled early in the set before Mia Schafer tied the score a 5-5. Amethyst Harper put down one of her nine kills for the 6-5 lead, and San José State went to win the set 25-18.
 
Set 2 – The Spartans led from the first serve and jumped out to a 10-0 lead, including three aces by Nelson who served all 10 points. The closest the Vikings got in the match was 10 points at 14-4, before Lousi recorded the final point for the 25-12 win.
 
Set 3 – Portland came out attacking in the final set, taking an early 9-5 lead and led for a good portion of the set. San José State kept the set close, tying the set at 18-18 on a Harper kill and back-to-back Lousi service aces gave SJSU the lead for good. Nelson put down her 11th kill for the game winner for the 25-23 win.
 
The Spartans open the home portion of the schedule this Thursday, September 2, with a non-conference match against Sacramento State at Spartan Gym. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
