1-0, 0-0 Mountain West. The Spartans opened the season with a 45-14 non-conference victory over Southern Utah University at home.

2020 Southern California (USC) record: 5-1, 5-0 Pacific-12 Conference South. The Trojans finished the season ranked 21st in the final Associated Press college football poll. USC is ranked 15th in the Associated Press' 2021 preseason poll.

Play-by-Play Radio Coverage: KDOW (1220 AM, Palo Alto) will broadcast the Southern California game. Justin Allegri calls the play-by-play. Kevin Richardson provides commentary. The Southern California broadcast begins at 6:30 p.m. (PT) with a pregame show. The broadcast also is available on the TuneIn app.

Television:  The Pac-12 Network will televise  the Southern California game.  Ted Robinson calls the play-by-play. Yogi Roth is the analyst. The Pac-12 Network telecast begins at 2:00 p.m. (PT).

Series history: USC leads the series, 4-0. The teams last played each in 2009 with the #4-ranked Trojans posting a 56-3 triumph in the season-opener for both teams.

2-0, 2-0: San José State can begin 2021 the same way the 2020 season started with a pair of victories. In 2020, the Spartans defeated Air Force, 17-6, and New Mexico, 38-21. San José State is taking a 1-0 record to USC after a 45-14 win over Southern Utah. The 1975 and 1976 seasons are the last time the Spartans were 2-0 at the start of consecutive seasons.

Facing a nationally-ranked opponent: #15-USC is the first nationally-ranked opponent for the Spartans since taking on #21-Boise State in a 52-42 loss in CEFCU Stadium in San José on November 2, 2019.
San José State's last win over a nationally-ranked opponent was on November 29, 2013 when the Spartans outscored #16-Fresno State, 62-52, in the team's final game of the season.
The last time San José State defeated a nationally-ranked team on the road was on November 1, 1980 when the Spartans overcame a 15-0 second-quarter deficit to defeat #10-ranked Baylor, the eventual Southwest Conference champion that year, 30-22 in Waco, Texas. Best season-opening home crowd in 10 years: San José State's announced attendance of 16,204 for the season home opener against Southern Utah is the best home attendance figure in a first game since September 17, 2011 when the Spartans hosted Nevada in front of 17,238 spectators. The current capacity of CEFCU Stadium is 18,203.

Most points scored in an opener since 1988: San José State's 45 points, all scored in the first three quarters, in its win over Southern Utah is the highest point total in an opening game since a 51-0 win at New Mexico State on September 3, 1988.
