SAN JOSE, Calif. - Fresh off their first win of the season, San Jose State women's soccer gets set for a two-game road trip to the Beehive State to take on Southern Utah and Utah Valley on Friday and Monday, respectively. The Spartans will look to carry their momentum forward after an impressive showing in their last match against UC Santa Barbara. SJSU won that nonconference bout by a 3-1 final, securing their first three-goal game of the past five seasons as they took down the Gauchos for the first time since 1998.

First Touches

  • This will be just the second meeting between the Spartans and Southern Utah all-time with the first installment coming on Sept. 16, 1997 - a 1-0 loss on neutral turf. The Thunderbirds are led by second-year head coach Kai Edwards and check into the match with a 1-3-0 mark. They opened the year with a 1-0 win over Hope International but are searching for their first win since.
  • Not unlike the Spartans' history with Southern Utah, San Jose State and Utah Valley have also met just one time in the programs' history - although this lone meeting went the Spartans' way. SJSU won in overtime in a 1-0 final in San Jose on Sept. 6, 2019. Current senior Karlee Pottorff was the catalyst for the game-winner with her 96th minute corner kick leading to a Jamilecxth Becerra header for the golden goal.
  • The Utah Valley Wolverines are led by fifth-year head coach Chris Lemay and check into the weekend with a 3-1 record. After suffering their first defeat of the season against No. 22 USC, 4-2, Utah Valley is set to face three-straight Mountain West programs beginning Friday with Utah State. The Spartans will be their second MW opponent on Monday and Boise State will round things out next Friday.
  • Two Spartans scored their first career goals in a Spartan uniform in SJSU's 3-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara. Freshman Taylor Phillips scored her first on a long-range attempt from well outside the box. Junior transfer Kiana Miyazato scored the decisive goal on a PK to put the Spartans up 3-1.
