Spartans Start Season In San Francisco

 FRANCISCO - Jicel Fernandez clocked a time of 22:19.3 (6K) to finish in eighth place in her first-ever collegiate meet, while Omar Pina ran a personal-best time of 26:31.5 (8K) to lead the San José State men's and women's cross country teams at the San Francisco State Invitational on Friday. The Spartans competed in the program's first meet in 657 days. 
 


The Spartans were led by three strong showings from their top trio of distance runners, two of which were racing for the first time at SJSU. 
 

  • Competing in her first collegiate meet, sophomore Jicel Fernandez led the Spartans with a time an eighth-place finish.
     
  • Racing for the first time as a Spartan, Daniela Salazar finished just behind Fernandez. Salazar placed 16th and clocked a time of 22:38.6. 
     
  • Rounding out the Spartan showings inside the top-25 was sophomore Juliette Noyer, finishing in 25th with a smooth 23:02.9. 
     
  • Sophomore Omar Pina led the men's program in San Francisco, placing 38th among counting times with a lifetime PR of 26:31.5. 

 
San José State is set to return to action on Oct. 1 when both the men's and women's programs compete at the Sacramento State Invitational in Rocklin, Calif.
