No. 11 Spartans Split With #9 UC Davis & No. 15 Santa Clara

San Jose, Calif.----- Among the things the San Jose State University men's water polo team learned in its first home matches of the season are it has a lot of scoring threats, a superb number-one goalkeeper, and it is capable of beating good teams when it plays four complete quarters.

The 11th ranked Spartans (2-3) got scoring from 11 of its 15 field players in a 16-6 win over 15th ranked Santa Clara (1-2) in the second of the team's three matches at the SRAC pool on the San Jose State University campus. San Jose State wasn't as fortunate in its first match of the day losing to No. 9 ranked UC Davis, 10-7.

The Spartans had three one-goal leads over the Aggies (5-1)  in the first two quarters, but a UC Davis three-goal outburst late in the second quarter turned the tide as San Jose State found itself trailing 6-4 at halftime.

The Spartans never got closer than three goals in the second half despite having six power play chances. San Jose State was 0-for-10 with a 6-on-5 advantage.

Power play success was evident in the Santa Clara win. San Jose State was 7-for-11 on the power play in its win over Santa Clara.

The Spartans tied the match at 3-3 late in the first quarter on an Ary Kamen power play goal and pulled away in the second quarter with three unanswered goals and another three-goal outburst in the first 3:00 of the third quarter. Mark Kis, who led all players with three scores, finished two power plays and Bende Pardi converted a 5-meter penalty shot during the San Jose State outburst.

Yahav Fire was string in goal stopping 11 Santa Clara shots.

San Jose State closed out the day with a 15-7 victory over Cuesta College in an exhibition match.

The Spartans close out a busy weekend of action Sunday, September 12 taking on No. 3 ranked California in Berkeley in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
